ALGHERO

Alghero is a very charming medieval town with lovely historical narrow streets leading into the wide piazzas.  Due to its strategic position town of Alghero was built around a fortified port founded in 1102 by the Genoese Doria family.  Medieval walls on the rocky outcrop stretching around the coastline provide picturesque views and are perfect for a short walk. The rustic charm of the town is enhanced by the bustling piazzas with lots of boutiques, historic building and restaurants.  Apart from stylish yacht marina, Alghero boasts a lively market held every Wednesday close to the Via Corsica.

A distinct Catalonian influence and abundant Catalan architecture can be easily spotted and in fact, Alghero is commonly referred to as a “Little Barcelona”.  Sophisticated explanation leaves us in the period of 1400 and 1700 A.C. during which Sardinia was occupied and ruled by Spain.  Even nowadays many locals speak Catalonian and menus in the restaurants as well as street signs are written in both Catalan and Italian. Alghero in the past was a prominent trading town famous for its red coral trade. A coral museum “Museo del Coralo di Alghero” can be found nearby Piazza Civica.

A Sardinian cuisine will not leave any food lover calm.  Trattorias, cafes and ice creams parlours are nothing short of heavenly experience. Especially at night, restaurant “Bastioni Marco Polo” provides an opportunity to taste some of the Alghero’s fresh local seafood and Sardinian wine.  Alghero’s area is famous for its special wine aged under the water.  Are you a wine and scuba diving lover? Great!  Have a moment and dive below the surface into the deep of 28 meters in order to discover cages of ageing wine named “Akenta” at the sea bottom of the of the Mediterranean sea.   Be sure to visit “Neptune’s caves”.
